“Better in our day” is a phrase that carries much negativity, but nostalgia can bring out both the good and bad memories, depending on who is doing the remembering. These films touch upon the misplaced memories of a woman dealing with dementia, the rooms that hold happy memories, the video footage that act as portals into a bygone era, and the old buildings that capture and fossilise our most nihilistic fantasies.

Alice Lowe (Sightseers) longs for the nostalgic tradition of marriage in For Better, and Michael Spicer (The Room Next Door / The Mash Report) recreates a long-lost televisual tradition to spark lost memories in Closedown.

The attending filmmakers will join us for a Q&A after the screening.

Contains scenes of suicide and self harm.

Programmed by Philip Ilson.
