Join the NOWNESS China team and special guests for screenings of their CHINA WAVE film series, with additional panel discussion following the 5th NOWNESS China Short Film Awards, held in Shanghai in December 2023 and supported by Chanel.

A selection of short films made by an exciting new generation of Asian filmmaking talent, selected from hundreds of submissions by a distinguished jury comprising experts from the film, cultural, and art industries.

This first programme is a literary exploration of intimate relationships, a cohort of analyses of geopolitics and authorities, and a reckoning of diverse materialities and interfaces. Filmmakers, guardians of these narratives, are proactively rekindling their connection with the world. The focal point remains on the intimate triad of personal life, work, and emotions. This intimacy spans a broad spectrum, embracing the local and the global, the pastoral and the industrial. It speaks to the physicality of daily spaces and the societal tapestry where different classes and groups resonate and empathize. The avenues of engagement meander through the realms of the corporeal and the political, the private and the public.
