A learning algorithm hallucinates flowers while Andra8 lives a solitary life in the virtual void. Automated sensory enhancement reveals the prevalence and proliferation of data. These works confront our interaction with (and perception of) new technologies, acknowledging the digital realm as a reality.
Exploring the paradoxes and rules within the online wellness movement and artificial ecologies, these shorts overlay archive, sonic landscapes and digital materials. In a strand that always champions innovative visual forms of storytelling, we select new work from artist Alison Nguyen (My favorite software is being here) and Wei-Chia Wu (Erica).

Cabo Tuna or The Management of the Sky
Unidad de Montaje Dialéctico
"Cabo Tuna or The Management of the Sky" is a materialistic re-reading of the history of artificial satellites and digital surveillance which, using footage found exclusively on YouTube, intertwines the origins of the Nazi and Soviet arms industries with the digital surveillance systems used in the Mexican context of the war on drugs. This narrative arc allows for an exploration of the Mexican government's failed attempts to create its own aeronautical rockets, the growing dependence on technology from foreign powers and companies, the privatization of space, and finally, the contemporary strengthening of the state's military control.
darkness within darkness
The work is a paper made video composed of digital image and physical material that delves into the essence of moving image. It divided the digital video into the film ratio of 24-frames-per-second. Through the transforming process in printing and scanning, the re-composed video is in between movement and stillness, virtual and concrete, digital and material. The contrasts have thus been related to the Oriental philosophy of Taoism, "one body with two sides" (Yin and Yang). With the video, I was trying to visualize the abstract natural law which denies description.
The short film Erica is a near-future narrative which pushes the interrelation between online self (developed through selfie-beautify app), beauty tech (plastic surgery, biomeds...), and automated online interaction. The user, Erica utilizes the beauty prosthesis and dives into a fictive world of online spaces where allow the online avatars to automatically interact with each other, through the data collected by beautify prosthesis wore by users.
They met under a ceiling of sky
A woman goes to an island to stay in the house of a friend. She goes alone to get some headspace on recent events. She has visited this house before, then in company, now in solitude.
A film written, shot and performed solely by the artist, having planned a different film with crew and actors whose arrival by ferry was prevented by high winds. Stranded on the island for 7 days, the artist went ahead with filming anyway, using the only body she had available behind and in front of the camera.
my favorite software is being here
A piece of speculative fiction, the video tells the story of a simulacral subaltern who has been created by an algorithm and raised by the Internet in isolation in a virtual void.
As she multitasks throughout the day, Andra8 is monitored and surveilled, finding herself overwhelmed by a web of global client demands. Something begins to trouble Andra8: her life depends on her compulsory consumption and output of human data – or so she’s been told. Andra8 explores the implications of such an existence, and what arises when one attempts to subvert them.
